I woke up with a jolt. Soft rays of sunlight peeked through the window. Without a second thought, I rolled up the furs, shoving my feet into my boots and running down the hall toward the stairs.

A glint of shined iron flashed through the front tavern door.

“I told you to wake up before the sun, girl,” Ada chided as I ran through the tables.

I threw the door open, scouring the area when I saw movement off to the side.

My feet pounded the ground until I caught up to him in front of the stables.

“Wait!” I called out, huffing out of breath.

The battle axes sat crossed on his upper back. Zurich turned, cocking his head to the side. “And who are you?” He asked, his voice deep and gruff with a lilt I couldn’t quite make out. Zurich stood tall, with broad shoulders and a complexion that rivaled the beauty of the night sky, with hair shorn close to his scalp.

I sucked in air to catch my breath. “Felix, Felix told me you could help me.”

Zurich rolled his eyes and marched on to the stable.

“Wait, I can pay you. I need to get back to Brunnen Valley. Please, it’s important.”

“It’s always important, but not to me.”

I huffed in frustration. “Is there nothing I can say that will change your mind?”

“No,” he said flatly.

I followed him into the stables. I reached for his arm and strangely enough, a sense of knowing washed over me. A part of me wondered if this was how it felt for Ramia. But I knew clear as day that he was not a Mage.

“You’re human,” I said with more surprise to my voice than I meant to add. All I received was a grumble in response. “Wait… please,” I begged once more.

Zurich turned on his heels, boxing me into the nearby door. “Look, little girl, I’m not in the mood for company. You Mages are all the same. You think you can come to me and demand services simply because I should be happy to jump when you say so for a few measly coins. I do work that I want to, not because I have no other choice. Now, once again, my answer is no.”

He said no with such resolve, but I remembered Felix telling me to pull on his heartstrings. And my story was nothing but sorrowful, but that wasn’t what would catch him off guard.

“And I’m not like the other Mages.” He scoffed at my response, turning his back toward his horse. “I didn’t know I was a Mage until a few months ago.” Another scoff sounded throughout the stable, with a few accompanying neighs from the horses.

“I grew up in the Colony.”

Zurich’s hands paused. He turned his towards me, taking a moment to look me up and down.

“Bullshit.”

“Rude. I’m not lying.”

“You’re telling me I should believe that you are a Mage that didn’t know it and somehow spent your whole life in the human Colony. But escaped and made your way to Virith? As I said, bull—shit.
